Review: The Tales of Beedle the Bard

The Tales of Beedle the BardThe Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Welcome to my favorite book to share with my son for bed-time stories!

I am reviewing this book strictly on a “bedtime” story book basis too. Really good bed-time story books are too few and far between. We have all read “Goodnight Moon”, Dr. Seuss, Grimm’s Fairy Tales, and Disney stories to our kids to the point our kids can recite them to us and well…they put us to sleep too. “The Tales of Beedle the Bard” give us bedtime story aficionados new material at long last!

This small companion book to the Harry Potter series is ideal for sharing with a new reader or for spending some great quality time with children reading to them. I find these stories are just the right length to use as bedtime stories; you know…something just long enough that you can read it entirely through and hopefully hear the blissful sound of snoozing at the end of it! This is something I look for and truly appreciate in good bedtime stories for my son. Well, that and a story that I can enjoy too. I can only read Dr. Seuss and “Goodnight Moon” so many times! Don’t get me wrong, I love those books but they are imprinted on the inside of my eyelids by now.

These stories are also unique and interesting enough to keep your child’s attention especially if you are able to add some pizzazz to them yourself by giving the characters voices. Personally, I found The Wizard and The Hopping Pot really lent itself easily to my voice naturally changing itself up for the different characters. I was surprised to suddenly find these voices, even with my horrible accents, coming out of me that I just don’t normally use. No, I’m not possessed or crazy it’s just simply how easily it happens with these stories and my son absolutely gobbled it up! It really created some memorable times between the two of us. I can still hear him laughing at me or staring wide-eyed, totally enthralled.

My husband has even admitted that he would also stand outside my son’s room so he could listen as well. He enjoyed hearing the stories too.

If you are lucky enough to find a book that both you and your child can enjoy together grab it! That’s my advice for this book…grab it! I think you will find it can help you create some treasured family memories too, just as it did for us.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard is a book I will hang on to for a very long time in anticipation of the day when I can share this with our grandchildren. If you have little ones around you go pick it up. If you have friends with kids, buy it for them…you will be glad you did.
